Tropical Birdland

Sightseeing attraction | Leicester | England | United Kingdom

Tropical Birdland in Leicester, England, is a unique attraction that delights bird enthusiasts and families alike. Located in the picturesque countryside of Leicestershire, this bird sanctuary spans approximately 6.5 hectares and provides a home for over 250 exotic birds from around the world. Since its opening in 1984, Tropical Birdland has become a popular destination dedicated to the care and presentation of parrots, toucans, hornbills, owls, and other fascinating bird species. It is a place that combines nature experiences with interactive encounters, transporting visitors to a tropical world in the heart of the English countryside.

One of the main features of Tropical Birdland is the opportunity to experience many of the birds up close. Along the "Parrot Path," visitors can watch and interact with free-flying parrots. These colorful birds, including macaws, cockatoos, and ring-necked parakeets, are known to land on the shoulders or arms of guests, especially when offered food such as nuts or fruits available on-site. This direct encounter makes the visit particularly memorable, although one must be cautious - some of the mischievous birds have a preference for snatching jewelry or nibbling on clothing. For the safety of visitors and the birds, staff are always on hand to provide tips and intervene if needed.

The park is divided into different areas, each offering different bird species and experiences. There are several walk-in aviaries where visitors can wander among soft-feathered birds like lorikeets and other exotic species. These aviaries are designed to mimic the animals' natural habitat and provide ample opportunity to see the animals in action. Another highlight is the "Chick Room," an area where visitors can observe the raising of chicks through a large window. This space showcases the park's efforts to preserve the population of its feathered residents and gives visitors a sense of the life cycle of these fascinating creatures.

In addition to the bird attractions, Tropical Birdland also offers a woodland trail that leads through a natural wooded area. This path is ideal for a peaceful stroll and provides insights into the local wildlife, such as squirrels or songbirds, which also inhabit the grounds. For families, there is a wooden adventure playground that has been a popular spot for children to play since 2013, while adults can enjoy the surroundings. The park is mostly outdoors, with many paths shaded by large trees that provide welcome shade on hot days. The main paths are made of firm gravel and are wheelchair accessible, although the woodland trail is less accessible due to roots and uneven terrain.

For visitor refreshment, the "Real Macaw Restaurant" near the playground offers a selection of food and drinks - from hot meals to coffee and cake. There are also picnic areas that invite visitors to bring their own snacks and relax amidst nature. A gift shop completes the offering, with a variety of souvenirs ranging from small mementos to thematic gifts that remind visitors of the colorful residents of the park. Tropical Birdland places great emphasis on the welfare of the animals, many of which come from rescue operations, and the staff are known for their friendliness and expertise, making the visit even more enjoyable.

The park is not just a place of entertainment, but also a sanctuary for birds that often come from difficult circumstances. Many of the residents are parrots that were given up by their previous owners because they could no longer afford the intensive care and attention these long-lived animals require. This conservation mission is conveyed to visitors through informative signs and conversations with staff, adding depth to the experience. Seasonal events, such as a winter wonderland with light trails, complement the program and make Tropical Birdland a year-round destination.

Tropical Birdland is a place that combines the beauty and diversity of tropical birds with the tranquility of the English countryside. It offers a rare opportunity to experience these colorful creatures up close, in a setting that is both relaxing and educational. Whether feeding the free-flying parrots, strolling through the aviaries, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings, the park leaves a lasting impression and is an ideal destination for nature and animal lovers.

We were going to spend the day in Leicester, but on a whim, we decided to do something completely unplanned. We saw the signs for the birdland as we were refuelling at the cross roads. My God, what a little gem of a place! I’m not a massive bird person but I absolutely loved my time there. So many species! Really enjoyed the fact we could purchase food for them and feed them ourselves. My highlight was definitely getting to hold their lovely birds out in the open. I will definitely be back with more people. Also enjoyed the coffee from the cafe!

Nice to see tropical birds with a bit of space. A good variety and also includes meerkat and wallaby pens. Great for both kids and adults to get close up to many birds and be able to handle and feed them too!

Got a shake down, and fruit taken from me not once, not twice but three times at different areas of the park by 2 very cheeky rainbow lorikeets 10/10, would get robbed again!

What a fun day out, we laughed all the way round! A huge variety of birds to see and learn about. They have colour codes on each cage to show the different types of foods you can feed them, which is also great for the kids to get involved with. A very interactive day, not only are you able to feed the birds but a lot of them will come and perch on you (if you want them to!) Lots of staff around to help who are very knowledgeable and helpful (my children asked them a LOT of questions!) A great play park after and a stunning coffee shop serving food and drinks. We have visited a couple of times and the kids ask to go back again. Highly recommend!

We spent 3 1/2 hours at Tropical Birdland and would probably have spent more if it had been a bit warmer. It was great fun seeing, feeding and holding such a large variety of birds. Everyone had a great time and there were lots of smiles. Suspect we’ll be talking about this until we go back again!

It's great to see that the location is worth visiting for bird watching and that all the birds are in good condition. This is certainly encouraging news for any bird enthusiast.

We spent about three hours looking at the birds and in the play area. I would have given 5 stars but we were disappointed with the attitude of the heavily tattooed and pierced female staff member. She was curt and rude to visitors. Maybe a bit of customer service training might improve her miserable demeanour?

Enjoyed the walk round and the birds free flight area where you can feed the many different types of birds and they can land on your arms and shoulders.

I absolutely love this place! I've visited twice, and after my third visit, I knew I had to get a membership. The variety of birds is incredible, and the beautifully designed aviaries make for a wonderful experience. The highlight for me is the parrot walk at the end—it’s truly amazing! Naturally, the birds are curious and may nibble at your buttons or anything shiny you’re wearing, but that’s all part of the charm. Every visit is a delightful mix of beauty and lovable chaos, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
